Training
The Metropolitan Police Academy is where new recruits receive their training; to be eligible for the six-month program, applicants must hold a valid driver’s license. Without a matric diploma, applicants are evaluated by Technikon SA to see if they possess the reading, writing, and math competencies required for the position.
Recruits get instruction in the use of weapons, making arrests, reporting accidents, and presenting evidence in court. Recruits are sent to various police stations for six months of field training after completing their six-month training program before being allocated to a position within the agency.
Each year, further training is conducted, requiring all officers to complete at least 18 hours of in-service training during which they are informed of any changes to the Road Traffic Act and Police Act.
